The family of Betty Pettigrew is seeking justice after a poorly-administered hair perm caused her to suffer a series of burn injuries that they claim led to her death, reports the New Hampshire Union Leader.

Pettigrew had a perm treatment to her hair at a salon within the Oceanside Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. The stylist allegedly failed to use the proper barriers and application procedures to ensure the chemical did not touch Pettigrew’s skin.

According to the lawsuit, Seguin allowed the perm chemicals to flow down to Pettigrew’s face and shoulders. Additionally, she allegedly did not wash the chemical from her hair properly. In less than three weeks, the nursing home noted in Pettigrew’s chart that she had a “rash/dermatology disorder” on her forehead and cheeks.

Along with the facial burns, the staff noted a scabbed area on Pettigrew’s right shoulder. They applied a cream to the injured area, but the lawsuit claims the chemical burn caused a quarter-inch deep hole in her shoulder about the size of a nickel.

The suit claims that the nursing home staff had ample time and evidence to identify a serious medical issue and seek treatment, but they poorly and negligently managed Pettigrew’s healthcare. The damage from the chemical burns progressed, causing her to suffer burns to her eyelid that a doctor would need to correct with surgery.

Before the doctor could treat her eyelid, Pettigrew suffered a fall, which caused a broken hip. The lawsuit claims the fall was a result of her diminished eyesight due to the chemical burns.

Pettigrew underwent surgery on her hip, but her health began to decline as she was unable to walk. She died approximately six and a half months after the negligently-performed perm.
